William Shatner Boldly Goes Where None of us Has Gone Before…But We Probably All Will

AI continues to both amaze and terrify me all at once. How many of you have seen the futuristic series “Black Mirror” called “Be Right Back” in which it tells the story of Martha, a young woman whose boyfriend is killed in a car accident. She discovers Avatar and AI technology that allows her to communicate with her boyfriend via text messages. She is so grief struck that she then UPGRADES her order to an actual android that mimics the behavior of her boyfriend. I won’t spoil the end but its an interesting exploration of the theme of grief and how it can be monetized with unpredictable consequences.

Today the great William Shatner aka Captain Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, turned 90 years old and is the first person to partner with a company called StoryFile in which he created an AI-powered interactive conversational video so family and friends can interact with him for years to come. As the Captain said, “This is for all my children and all my children's children and all my children's loved ones and all the loved ones of the loved ones. That's my gift to you down through time.“

We are at the dawn of a time in which we can continue to interact with our deceased love ones or favorite actors through the wonder of AI.
